- Jellyfish are not actually fish. Despite their name, they’re invertebrates, belonging to the phylum Cnidaria, which also includes corals and sea anemones.
- Jellyfish have existed for a very long time. They are among the oldest multi-organ animals, with evidence suggesting they’ve been around for at least 500 million years, predating dinosaurs.
- Jellyfish are mostly water. Their bodies are composed of about 95% water, which is why they often disappear quickly when washed ashore.
- Not all jellyfish are simple creatures. While many lack complex structures, some, like the box jellyfish, have surprisingly sophisticated vision with up to 24 eyes.
- Jellyfish exhibit diverse feeding habits. Some jellyfish trap prey with tentacles arranged in a spiral pattern, while others use their tentacles like trawling nets to capture food as they drift.
