Want to learn some great insights? Read on.
Q: You started at DevMountain correct?
A: I started at Utah Valley University doing generals and hadn’t picked a major but was leaning towards marketing. Then I went to DevMountain for UX/UI and a little bit of coding. After finishing at DevMountain I decided to go into Product Design for user experience design.
Q: What made you want to go to DevMountain?
A: I had a few friends in the marketing field who went and really loved it!
Q: How did your experience at DevMountain prepare you for what you’re doing now?
A: I think DevMountain did a great job of explaining user experience design for anything. It covers user interfaces, as well as why users should be doing what within websites, apps, and products. That’s one of the main things we focus on with our clients is the “why” in design.
Q: How did you find BRJ and why did you decide to work here?
A: I met Josh (BRJ co-founder) at a networking event held by DevMountain. He was there doing a presentation and I spoke to him a little and ended up getting hired.
Q: Is there anything difficult about being the director of web support and strategy?
A: A challenge is keeping up with all the trends. As an agency, we must also consider the different industries that we’re working with and the trends for each because each industry can be different.
Q: Okay, now for the big question… What is web support and strategy?
A: A continuation of making sure your website is fast, accessible, and secure. That’s something a lot of people don’t consider when starting a website. Websites need to be updated continually. As your business changes your website should change too and if your business isn’t changing then I have some questions for you. People jump into trying to drive traffic to their site but they’re wasting money if they’re not making sure their website is fast, accessible, and secure first.
Q: What kind of things slow a website down?
A: Old versions of plugins are a big issue. Any integration or plugins will need to be updated correctly. Thankfully, Pressable (our hosting platform) is very helpful in doing that and making sure that everything is updated correctly.
Q: What things are you excited about at BRJ?
A: The collaboration. We’re all interested in the same goal in terms of web design and branding. Being able to thrive off everyone’s knowledge. Also, the culture here. The culture is something else. We have a lot of fun here.
Q: What advice would you give to anyone looking to enter the world of web support and strategy?
A: The biggest thing is to have the correct tracking measures in place. Whether that’s google analytics or what we use Smart analytics, which is analytics on steroids. Second, would be to stay up to date on trends.
Q: Okay, change of pace. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
A: Pistachio ice cream.
Q: Who is your current hero?
A: Julie Zhou. She was the vice president of product design at Facebook and wrote an amazing book. One thing that makes her my hero is her perspective on user experience, product design, and how to be a good leader.
Q: Do you have any good book recommendations?
A: Yes, The Making of a Manager by Julie Zhou.
