The Current Behind Your Growth: The Brand Story of Thalassa

Summary:

Who this article is for: Small and mid-sized business owners, marketing leaders, and brand-minded founders who want to see how an AI service can be branded around outcomes instead of hype — and anyone curious about the thinking behind Thalassa.

Key takeaways:

  • Thalassa was positioned around outcomes, not AI itself: AI is the leverage, the outcome is the product
  • The name comes from the Greek spirit of the sea, who didn’t rule the ocean but was the ocean — reflecting a brand that works with a business’s natural momentum
  • The logo intentionally breaks from sterile tech icons, pairing a crowned goddess (human creativity and leadership) with continuous waves (the technology working behind the scenes)
  • A light-mode-first palette of whites and warm orange signals optimism and calm rather than treating AI as something to fear
  • Thalassa is built for growth-minded businesses that know AI matters but haven’t turned scattered tools into working systems

What’s inside:

  • The two strategic directions explored and why optimism won over pain points
  • The mythology behind the Thalassa name and how it connects to Big Red Jelly
  • How the logo evolved from sunrise and theta concepts to a heraldic emblem
  • The reasoning behind the typography, color palette, and light-mode aesthetic
  • Who Thalassa is for and how the Fully Leveraged Method works

When Josh and Zach brought me in to brand Big Red Jelly’s new AI service, the brief was simple on paper: a name, a logo, a tagline, and a color story. It needed to feel like it came from Big Red Jelly, but it also needed to be able to stand on its own if the service took off.

The harder question sat underneath that brief. How do you brand an AI service when it feels like every company is suddenly an AI company?

My answer, after several rounds of exploration, is Thalassa. Here’s how we got there, why the logo looks the way it does, and who we built it for.

Two Directions, One Choice

Early in the process, I brought the team two strategic directions.

The first leaned into the pain point. Most businesses today have tried ChatGPT, bought a few tools, maybe built an automation or two. But they’re still stuck in what the service planning called “random acts of AI”: disconnected prompts, scattered tools, unclear ownership, and very little measurable impact. That direction sounded like “stop treading water” and “move from experimenting with AI to operating with AI.”

It’s a real problem, and it’s true. But building a brand on it would have positioned AI as a mess to clean up, and positioned us as the cleanup crew.

Thalassa AI combines the power of AI with world-class human expertise to help small and mid-sized businesses grow better, faster and further.

The second direction came from a line in the service positioning that I kept coming back to. We chose that one. It’s future-oriented instead of fear-driven. It’s calm instead of urgent. It doesn’t say “we’ll fix your mess.” It says “let us show you what’s possible.” That shift shaped every decision that followed.

“AI is not the product. The outcome is the product. AI is the leverage. Most businesses do not need someone to impress them with AI tools. They need someone who understands their business, can identify the bottlenecks, and can install practical systems that improve outcomes.”

Thalassa AI includes coaching, consulting and support for small to mid sized businesses to leverage the power of AI and grow.

Why Thalassa

Thalassa comes from ancient Greek mythology. She is the primordial spirit of the sea. What drew me to her is one important distinction: unlike the gods who came later, she didn’t rule the ocean or conquer it. She was the ocean.

There’s also an old fable in which the sea rises up in the form of a woman to defend herself. Her argument is simple. The sea is naturally calm. It’s the winds that stir up the waves and make the water feel dangerous.

That fable became the heart of the brand. Your business is already built to grow. The chaos usually comes from the winds around it: disjointed systems, manual follow-up that never happens, company knowledge scattered across people and documents, and tools that don’t talk to each other. Thalassa doesn’t fight any of that head-on. It changes the conditions so the current moves with you instead of against you.

The name also connects back to Big Red Jelly in a meaningful way. A jellyfish doesn’t survive despite its environment. It thrives because of it. Thalassa is that environment for our clients.

We also made a deliberate choice to give the service its own name rather than calling it “Big Red Jelly AI.” Just like High Tide, our proprietary CRM platform, Thalassa is built to stand on its own — someone who has never heard of Big Red Jelly can find it, understand it, and use it — while still being clearly powered by Big Red Jelly.

AI as an Environment, Not the Headline

Every brand needs a clear personality, and Thalassa’s is the Sage and the Catalyst. A calm, wise guide that doesn’t force or fight, but introduces a native, self-sustaining system that elevates everything it touches.

That archetype defines how Thalassa talks about AI. AI is not the star of the show. It’s background infrastructure: the current underneath the surface, powering the business without being the center of the conversation. The conversation stays on what our clients actually care about: more leads, better follow-up, cleaner content systems, clearer reporting, and teams freed up to do the human work that moves a business forward.

That’s where the tagline came from: The Current Behind Your Growth. Not in front of you. Not in your way. Behind you, and working in your favor.

The Logo: Choosing Human Over Sterile

The logo went through the most exploration of anything in this project.

Our first round included three directions. One was a sun setting over calm, steady water, which felt closest to the existing Big Red Jelly jellyfish marks with its dome shape. Another was a sun rising with clean, rounded rays, built around future growth and a new dawn. The third was a theta mark, drawn from the Greek letter that begins Thalassa’s name.

All three were solid. But one piece of feedback from Josh changed the direction entirely. People are getting burnt out on sterile, sans-serif tech icons — they’re everywhere in the AI space. What makes Thalassa different is that it combines the power of AI with human creativity, strategy, and understanding. So why should the logo look like every other tech company?

The team gave me the green light to get bold. Josh pointed to Liquid Death as an example of a brand that ignored every convention in its category and won because of it. That opened the door to the mark we landed on.

The final Thalassa emblem shows the goddess, crowned, encased within continuous waves. Every element carries meaning. The water represents the powerful technology working behind your operations. The crowned goddess represents human creativity and leadership commanding that momentum. The circle holds it all together, suggesting a contained, proven process rather than open-ended chaos.

It’s heraldic and editorial on purpose — it feels less like an app icon and more like a crest, something with history and prestige behind it. For a premium service, that matters.

The typography follows the same thinking. The team wanted a serif wordmark specifically to avoid a techy feel, so we chose Noto Serif ExtraCondensed. Its tall, condensed letterforms bring an editorial, almost mid-century modern quality to the name. We paired it with Buvera, a clean sans-serif, for body copy so everything stays readable and modern.

Color, Light, and Breathing Room

A lot of AI brands live in dark mode. Black backgrounds, neon accents, glowing interfaces. It communicates mystery at best, and at worst quietly reinforces the idea that AI is something to be afraid of.

We went the other direction. Thalassa is light-mode-first, built on clean whites and expansive white space. The palette pulls directly from the Big Red Jelly gradient, flowing from our warm orange into the deep magenta we call “jelly,” with Thalassa leaning into the orange side. It feels like a sunrise over the water, which is exactly the point.

Thalassa AI is a new service powered by Big Red Jelly to help small businesses leverage the power of AI and grow their businesses faster and more efficiently.

Every visual choice supports the same set of feelings: optimistic, calming, deliberate, seamless, fluid, premium, and effortless. Minimal layouts and soft organic gradients give the brand a sense of breathing room, luxury, and frictionless scale. When someone lands on a Thalassa page, it should feel like the pressure just dropped.

Who Thalassa Is For

Thalassa is built for growth-minded small and mid-sized businesses, along with the marketing, sales, and operations leaders inside them. These are people who know AI matters but aren’t sure where to start. They’ve tried tools but haven’t turned them into systems. They want more output from their current team without adding headcount, and they have valuable business knowledge that’s scattered across different people and documents.

They don’t need another tool. They need a partner who understands brands, websites, marketing, and how a business actually grows — and who can put AI to work on top of that foundation.

That partnership runs through Thalassa’s Fully Leveraged Method: The Academy, a 90-day foundation where we assess the business and launch the first high-value plays; The Lab, a 12-month engagement for continuing to build and connect systems across the organization; and The Studio, an executive-level engagement that pairs AI with stronger operating systems, strategy, and a mastermind of high-growth leaders.

Let the Current Work for You

Thalassa’s brand is built on a simple belief: your business is already capable of growth. With the right current behind it, that growth becomes steadier, faster, and far less exhausting to sustain.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Service Branding

Thalassa is Big Red Jelly’s AI implementation, coaching, and growth service for small and mid-sized businesses. It helps companies turn scattered AI tools into practical systems that support marketing, sales, and operations.

A standalone name lets the service be discovered and understood on its own, even by people who don’t know Big Red Jelly. It can grow into its own website and clientele while still being powered by Big Red Jelly, similar to our High Tide platform.

Thalassa is the primordial Greek spirit of the sea. Unlike later gods who ruled the ocean, she represented the sea itself. In an old fable, she explains that the sea is naturally calm and it’s the winds that cause chaos — which mirrors how we see business growth.

Most AI brands rely on minimal, sans-serif tech icons. Thalassa’s value is combining AI with human strategy and creativity, so we chose an organic, heraldic emblem that feels human, premium, and distinct in a crowded category.

The waves represent the technology working behind your operations. The crowned goddess represents human creativity and leadership guiding that momentum. The circle holds it together, signaling a contained, proven process.

Dark, neon-heavy visuals can make AI feel mysterious or intimidating. Thalassa’s whites, warm oranges, and open layouts communicate optimism, calm, and breathing room — reinforcing that AI should feel like support, not a threat.

Lead with the outcomes clients care about — more leads, better follow-up, less manual work — rather than the technology. Position AI as the environment that powers the business, and let the brand’s personality, visuals, and messaging reinforce trust and clarity.

Thalassa is for growth-minded small and mid-sized businesses, along with their marketing, sales, and operations leaders, who know AI matters but aren’t sure where to start or haven’t turned their tools into real systems.
