Insights from the Trenches: How Product Expertise Can Elevate Agency Business Development

More Than Just Emails and Pitches

In the bustling realm of agency business development, rolling up your sleeves and diving deep into your services so knowledge isn’t just helpful—it’s essential. I learned through experience that an in-depth grasp of what we’re crafting for clients doesn’t just enrich conversations; it can be the ultimate deal-closer.

Out of My Comfort Zone: Immersed in Creative Workflows

Recently I had the opportunity to leave my normal business development desk and spend several hours over the past couple weeks in our branding wing. I collaborated with one of our top-notch brand strategists to create a client’s brand for an innovative new non-profit they’re starting. From a suite of logo options to the perfect palette and typography, we tailored each aspect to the client’s unique identity so they can connect with their audience and prepare for pitches they have coming up in 2024. I even got my hands on creating branded content for their landing page! The result? Being on those calls, seeing the client’s reactions, and seeing our vision align with what they envisioned solidified for me the importance of each step in our processes.

Why Jump Into Creative Waters?

The aim was to get a real taste of what I’m always explaining to my clients. Working side by side Josh in branding and Stephen in web design taught me things I just couldn’t get anywhere else, especially not in some kind of online sales training. Because of our client’s accelerated timeline I also learned where we can be flexible to meet our clients needs and where we have to stick to our processes so that quality is never lost.

Adding Value Through Learning

Here are my takeaways: creating top-tier work is demanding, more than I ever imagined. And creativity? It’s not just a splash of inspiration—it’s a science. The subtle psychology of colors, the influence of shapes, and designing a user’s online journey all play into the masterpiece. Now, when I chat with clients I’m not just relaying information from my team—I’m sharing firsthand insights and answering their technical questions based on my experience. This isn’t just about boosting my pitches; it’s about bringing to life the goals of my clients and helping them understand the purpose behind what we do so they can use similar principles in the future.

When Clients Trust Us We Can Educate

Getting into the thick of it has helped me grow a new level of trust in our process. Witnessing the creative minds of Josh and Stephen has expanded my view of why they make certain decisions and why our clients really should trust them! It’s not just about trying to fit timelines; it’s about where we can push our clients’ preconceived notions so that the end product is even better than they expected.

Conclusion

Keeping stride in the fast-paced world of Big Red Jelly is more than a challenge—it’s a craft. From making the initial contact of this client to the brainstorming sessions to the final touches, shadowing the creative process has amped up my respect for our team and fine-tuned my ability to showcase the true value of our services. And when I’m in the room with potential clients, I’m not just selling them an idea—I’m offering them a partnership with a proven, passionate team.
